Is nuclear energy really safer than sex?

today i was walking down the bruin walk, a place on campus which usually has lots of student activist groups, y a veces muchos estudiantes locos. by locos i mean crazy extreemists, like people with political theories on how politicians are playing out biblical predictions and other wackos. today i passed by some random dude pleading for votes, with a sign that said NUCLEAR ENERGY IS SAFER THAN SEX.

while sex is no doubt a very risky activity, i think that the risks of using nuclear energy are way more severe than having sexual intercourse. Of course when we have sex we risk contracting STIs, HIV, or having a baby. while having AIDs can kill you, i feel like if a nuclear energy plant were to blow up, or if waste was to leak into a city's water supply, the effects could be far more catastrophic. yes aids is killing millions, but look at what hiroshima did!

nuclear waste doesn't break down and dissapear, where HIV can be stopped if people take steps to protect themselves. other risks of having sex are not nearly comparable. yes having a baby can be really scary if you're not ready for it, but i think being exposed to nuclear waste would be a lot worse.

From Edward Teller?
I think the sign relates to the discussion by the late Edward Teller that you get more radiation from sharing a bed with someone for a year than you would sleeping outside the fence of a nuclear power plant. His punch line was to the effect that it was very dangerous to have multiple partners...

Of course, nuclear is more feared than AIDS because such installations are run by large organizations where individuals make their own choices. Personal choice often trumps actuarial statistics when it comes to risk.
