chilling in the holy land
Related to country: Palestine

right now i am on the birthright israel trip and boy is it intence. it is absolutely beautiful here but i keep on thinking about who was here before we came and settled the land. before i came to israel i was very against the idea of a jewish state but since i have been here i have learned more about the history. i think that it is so crazy that boats of jewish immigrants were turned away in so many countries. in many ways we had no where to go, we couldn't even return to our homes after the holocaust. anti-semitism didn't just end after world war II. i think that things are a lot more different now days and i feel safe calling myself a jew in north america. europe and the middle east are a different storey it seems. i was thinking about buying a star of david necklace but then i realized that if i wore it into palestine i would probabley get spit on. that is more complicated than just straight up anti-semitism though, as israel annexed around 780,000 palestinians from their homes and killed many innocent people. it is wierd because when ever i read about the creation of the jewish state i have always read them as TERRORISTS but here they think of them as revolutionaries. it is sad because before the creation of israel it seems that the middle east was very friendly to jews, especially compared to europe. anyways if anyone lives around here and wants to take me in i need a place to stay SOON so i would appreciate a couch to sleep on. if not hostels are cheap too, but i don't know if i can leave my bag there or what? anyways, that's all for now. peace out bredren.

just a thought: what we need to focus more on is the alliance between arabs and jews. after all, Israel itself is home to many many Arab Israelis. The on-going conflict in the middle east is tragic, and we need to support the peace movements in both camps. instead of thinking in terms of "us" and "them" based on ethnicity, perhaps we should rather look at similarities in ideology and the hope for peace.

I hope you will enjoy your time there! I have, unfortunately, never been to Israel myself and would love to go. (also to visit the Palestinian areas of course, I have several palestinian friends)

The enemy is no one?
I think this article in today's Globe and Mail speaks to this issue.

This sounds like a great initiative!

Shalom
Hey girl,
I just got back from MusiChaos at Kimbercote, where I discovered the answer to the my-own-fault-mystery of why you never returned cell phone message: you're in the Holy Land! What a bad memory I have!! Anyways, now that I'm not taking it personally, sending many good vibes and wishing much luck on your travels... Say hi to G-d for me if you leave a note in the wailing wall, ok ;) ?
